Ribbons in Stoke?

Last week I found multiple ribbons tied on to random pieces on scenery scattered around the Staffordshire Uni Stoke Campus. After seeing this them I wonder what they were for as there was no information about them at all. Could this have been a massive brand awareness strategy by staffs? A scavenger hunt? Or even a night club venue attempt for attention. It really interested me when I saw multiple ribbons on my commute to my lessons   and I was disappointed when they started to disappear and I hadn't learnt what they were for. I asked my flatmates as well, they didn't know either.
